Damon Salvatore works to expose Mason Lockwood. They agree to a truce, but Damon eventually stabs Mason, who quickly heals. Katherine threatens to kill Elena and her loved ones if Stefan doesn't break up with her. Elena comes face-to-face with Katherine for the first time. Mason tells Tyler Lockwood he has to kill somebody in order for the werewolf gene to be triggered. Stefan and Elena pretend to break up. Katherine visits Caroline late at night.
