Klaus (b. before 600 BC[1]—June 20, 1992) was the name given to an Old One by the townspeople of Swartzschild, Germany. Being an Old One, he was never human, and claimed to have bargained with the Devil.
In the 15th century, Klaus turned the Baron von Swartzschild's daughter, Katarina, into a vampire upon Gudren's urging. Katarina later returned to Klaus, who trained her to give in to her vampire instincts, but also abused her. After learning that she was killed, he attempted to enact revenge against Stefan and Damon Salvatore, but was ultimately taken to Judgment by the ghosts of Fell's Church.
